The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has issued show-cause notices to 39 construction sites in Thane for failing to adhere to air pollution control norms. TMC officials have warned that stop-work orders will be issued if these sites do not comply with the guidelines, according to an official statement.
An official from TMC emphasised that maintaining air quality remains a priority, with several measures already implemented across Thane. The TMC has directed 297 construction sites to comply with dust pollution control guidelines. However, 39 sites have failed to adhere to the norms and have subsequently been served notices.
The civic body initially issued notices to 297 construction sites to ensure compliance with air pollution control regulations. Of these, only 31 sites have followed the guidelines. A penalty of ₹4 lakh has been imposed on 151 sites, alongside orders to adhere to the regulations.
Additional Commissioner of TMC, Sandeep Malvi, stated that construction work at non-compliant sites will be halted immediately. He added, “The Environment Department of Thane Municipal Corporation should conduct surprise inspections of all 297 construction sites to verify compliance with air pollution norms.”
According to TMC officials, various measures have been implemented to maintain air quality, as directed by the High Court in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).
Manisha Pradhan, Chief Environment Officer of TMC, revealed that penalties amounting to ₹1.7 lakh have been imposed on violators following several complaints regarding air pollution.
TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao has instructed developers to install air pollution monitoring devices at their construction sites. The Environment Department will conduct regular inspections of these sites and take strict action against any irregularities.
This proactive approach is part of TMC’s commitment to addressing air pollution and ensuring sustainable urban development.
