Los Angeles: Cathay Pacific Airlines flight CX880 took off in January 2025 and landed in Los Angeles on December 31, 2024, giving passengers a chance to celebrate the New Year twice. The reason behind this is the imaginary international date line drawn on the Pacific Ocean.
The passengers of this plane had earlier celebrated the New Year in Hong Kong. After this he reached Los Angeles and celebrated the New Year again. For these tourists, it was a memorable entry into the first Silver Jubilee year of the twenty-first century as they got a chance to celebrate the New Year twice.
The reason for this unique incident is the International Dateline built on the Pacific Ocean. When an aircraft crosses this dateline its date changes. Moving westward moves the plane’s date forward by one day and moving eastward moves the plane’s date back one day. For this reason, the first date also took place when the tourists took a flight from Hong Kong in the morning and crossed the international dateline and reached Los Angeles. In this way these tourists got a chance to celebrate the New Year twice. This incident was widely discussed on social media.
Interestingly, this international dateline has no legal status and is not even a straight line. In many countries this line also takes turns according to the geography there. For example, this line runs in a zigzag shape between Russia and Alaska.
