Kochi: A shocking incident involving Congress MLA Uma Thomas falling from a makeshift stage at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi has raised serious concerns about safety violations. The event, held on December 29, aimed to set a Guinness World Record for a mass dance performance.
Video footage of the incident, which surfaced on January 2, 2025, reveals exact moments when Thomas fell off the stage resulting in the MLA sustaining severe injuries and being placed on ventilator support.
Video Shows Exact Moments Of Thomas’ Tragic Fall
The footage shows Thomas navigating the cramped stage, struggling to manoeuvre through the limited space between chairs and a flimsy queue manager, which doubled as a barrier. As she moved to the front row, actor Sijoy Varghese appeared to suggest she change seats. Attempting to pass a person nearby, she stumbled and lost her balance.
Grasping at the inadequate queue manager for support, she fell approximately 15 feet to the ground. Other individuals, including Culture Minister Saji Cherian, GCDA Chairman K Chandran Pillai and District Police Chief Putta Vimaladitya, were present on stage and witnessed the incident, as per The Hindu report.
Organiser Of Event Surrenders To Police
Following the incident, Nigoshkumar M, the proprietor of Mridanga Vision, which organized the event, surrendered to the police on January 2. The Kerala High Court had earlier directed him to appear before investigators in connection with allegations of security lapses. The police have charged Nigoshkumar and four other office bearers of Mridanga Vision with various offenses, including cheating and criminal breach of trust.
The cheating case was based on complaints by participants’ parents, alleging that the organizers collected large sums of money from over 12,000 participants under false pretences. They accused the organisers of promising participation in a Guinness World Records event and charging fees for costumes, travel and registration, which caused huge financial loss. An FIR has been registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 316(2), 318(4), and 3(5).
