Mumbai: The Kurar police have registered an FIR against an employee of Cholamandalam Finance Company for allegedly abetting a suicide. The deceased, Suraj Jaiswal, 27, had taken a Rs.15 lakh vehicle loan from the company but failed to pay two EMIs (Equated Monthly Installments).

As a result, the company’s employee, Vijya Ohal, 47, repeatedly contacted him regarding the pending payments. On December 31, allegedly due to Ohal’s harassment, Jaiswal reportedly hanged himself at his residence and died. The case was registered on January 1.

According to the FIR, Jaiswal resided alone in Kandivali East. In September 2024, he had taken a Rs 15 lakh loan for purchasing a truck from Cholamandalam Finance Company, whose head office is in Chennai. He ran a transport business for a living. In November 2024, Jaiswal failed to pay the EMI.

Consequently, Vijya Ohal contacted Jaiswal’s brother, Sunil Jaiswal, 40, who had stood as surety for the loan, after Suraj did not answer the calls. Ohal asked Sunil to pay the overdue EMI. Sunil then contacted his brother and learned that Suraj was unwell, which had caused him to miss the November EMI and subsequently the December EMI as well.

Since December 24, Ohal had been contacting both brothers. On December 29 and 30, Ohal visited Suraj’s residence. Sunil reportedly told Ohal that the company could seize the truck as they would not be able to pay the EMI. However, Ohal did not seize the truck.

On December 31, around 6 a.m., Ohal arrived at the location where the truck was parked and informed Sunil that Suraj had been answering his calls until midnight on December 30 but stopped responding after that. Ohal then took the truck’s documents from Sunil which Suraj kept with his brother. Both brothers lived in nearby areas.

Shortly after, Sunil received a call from Suraj’s neighbour, informing him that Suraj had hanged himself. Sunil rushed to Suraj’s residence and found him hanging from the ceiling hook with a rope. He brought Suraj down and took him to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali West, where doctors pronounced him dead after an examination.

Sunil subsequently approached the Kurar police station and filed a complaint against Vijya Ohal alleging that Ohal was constantly harassing his brother for EMIs. The police registered the case under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
