Navi Mumbai: Over 5,000 youth from the Sikh community ushered in the New Year by hearing spiritual discourses and undertaking community services. To keep the younger generation away from late-night parties and drinking in the guise of celebrations, the community organised a three-day spiritual meet.
The event, organised by the Supreme Council Navi Mumbai Gurudwaras, in association with Dashmesh Charitable Trust, was held from December 30, 2024 to January 1, 2025. The members of the community assembled at Ganpatseth Tandel Exhibition Ground in Nerul to listen to spiritual discourses and recitations by prominent Sikh scholars.

The general secretary of the Supreme Council, MS Randhawa, said, “Over the years, the event (now in its 16th year) has received tremendous response. This is a joint initiative by all the nine gurudwaras of Navi Mumbai as well as the Punjabi Cultural Welfare Association. Our intent is to give the younger generation a new way to celebrate New Year, with socially and spiritually benefitting activities.”
One of the highlights of the event was a thematic display of the historical journey of the Sikh culture. Seven scholars were invited from the Golden Temple in Amritsar to conduct the kirtan of the Guru Granth Sahib. The youth of the community managed the langar services, safekeeping of footwear, and attending to the numerous stalls set up in the ground.
“The challenge to provide free meals to over 10,000 guests was done by the langar team and the storing of footwear and issuing of tokens was another major duty undertaken by the youth,” said a member, Charanjit Singh Parawana. Some of the important scholars present for the event were Bhai Baljit Singh from the USA, Bhai Balwinder Singh Ji Rangila, Bhai Manpreet Singh Ji Kanpuri and others.-
