New Orleans car attack: The horrific car attack at New Orleans’ Bourbon Street on first day of the new year shook the state of Texas and the USA as a whole. A man rammed a car into pedestrians who were celebrating the new year. The attack took place in the early hours of January 1 (local time). Here is the update about the tragic incident

New Orleans Car Attack: What We Know So Far:

1. Attacker was part of US Army earlier: The man who rammed the car into the crowd is a US Army veteran. He served in the army from 2007 to 2020 as an HR and IT specialist.

2. Latest Death Toll: The death toll has risen to 15. Those injured are receiving treatment in hospitals.

3. Identity Of The Attacker: The attacker has been identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar (42) from Texas. He killed 10 people and injured 30 when he rammed the car into the crowd. The death toll later rose to 15. He was killed in exchange of fire with the police after the car attack.

4. Suspect Stayed In Airbnb Before Attack: NBC News has quoted Louisiana attorney general who told the news network that Jabbar stayed in an Airbnb before the attack.

5. Act of Terrorism: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.

6. ISIS flag On The Car: The FBI has said that Jabbar had ISIS flag on the car when he carried out the attack.

7. Videos Before The Attack: Reports in the US media have said that Jabbar made several videos before his killing spree. In these videos, he reportedly declared that he had joined ISIS.

8. The Vehicle Used For Attack: The pickup truck Jabbar used was a rented vehicle rented from Turo. It is an online platform that let’s vehicle owners let others rent their vehicles.

9. President Takes Notice: US President Joe Biden took cognisance of the tragedy on Wednesday. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he said that law enforcement was ‘intensively’ investigating the incident. He warned that “no one should jump to conclusions”

10. Sports Event Postponed After Attack: The attack took place near an arena where a college football game was scheduled to take place on Wednesday night. It has now been postponed to Thursday.

Horrific videos emerged following the attack, some of them showing the devastation on the street with people lying motionless, some of them in a pool of blood.
