Mumbai: A 46-year-old man fell prey to loan sharks and ended up losing Rs 2.18 lakh in 51 transactions after drawing an instant loan of Rs 4,500 from an app.

Despite having paid the said amount, his WhatsApp, Facebook, email, contacts and gallery were accessed by the scammers, who threatened to morph and circulate his photographs. The complainant, who hails from Beed and works in a school, was looking for a loan to renovate his home.

In September last year, he came across an advertisement on Facebook. On clicking the link, a loan app got downloaded on his phone and Rs 4,500 got credited into his bank account. Thereafter, he started receiving calls and messages, asking him to repay the loan. He repaid the amount but kept receiving threatening calls, with scammers gaining access to his personal data. The terrified man was forced to pay Rs 2.18 lakh.
