Pakistan’s entry into the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the eighth time has created a new stir in global politics. With temporary membership for 2025-26, Pakistan has got an opportunity to present its views on this powerful platform. Although Pakistan will not have the right to veto like the permanent members, it will definitely provide an opportunity to spread propaganda against India and create controversy on the international stage.
Pakistan’s temporary membership
Pakistan has started its two-year tenure as a temporary member of the UNSC from January 1, 2025. On this occasion, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Munir Akram said that Pakistan is committed to playing an active and constructive role in solving global challenges. “Our presence will be felt in the Security Council,” he said in a statement to APP.
Pakistan got 182 votes in the 193-member General Assembly, much more than the required 124 votes. Earlier, Pakistan had been a non-permanent member of the UNSC seven times, the last term being in 2012-13.
Facing geopolitical challenges
Munir Akram said that Pakistan has become a member of the Security Council at a time when the world is going through serious geopolitical turmoil. Highlighting the ongoing conflicts, arms race and growing threat of terrorism in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, he said that Pakistan will play a responsible role in dealing with all these challenges.
Challenges for India
Although Pakistan will preside over the UNSC in July, its powers will be limited as it does not have veto power like the permanent members. Nevertheless, this forum will provide an opportunity for Pakistan to highlight its stance against India at the international level. Experts believe that this can become a challenge for India on the diplomatic front.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said that this tenure of Pakistan reflects its experience and commitment. He said Pakistan will support peacekeeping efforts by opposing terrorism, illegal use of force and unilateral actions. However, despite limited powers, Pakistan’s entry into the UNSC is a sign of caution for India, as it will try its best to raise its agenda at this forum.
