Which train is this?
This train runs on the border of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Its name is Bhakra-Nangal train. This train has been providing free service for almost 75 years. It is operated by Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).
This train runs in the area of Bhakra-Nangal Dam, one of the tallest straight gravity dams in the world. This train has been in operation since the time of construction of the dam and has been continued as a heritage till date.
Specialty of Bhakra-Nangal train
- This train covers a distance of 13 kilometers between the Sutlej River and the Shivalik Hills.
- No fare of any kind is charged from the passengers traveling in it.

How did this tradition start?
Construction of the Bhakra-Nangal Dam began in 1948. At that time this train was used to transport laborers and heavy machines from one place to another. When the dam was formally inaugurated in 1963, it opened for train passengers and tourists.
Hundreds of people travel every day
- About 800 people travel by this train every day.
- In 2011, BBMB decided to discontinue this service due to financial losses. But later it was decided to continue it as heritage and tradition.
- Even today people travel in this train and enjoy the natural beauty and amazing structure of the dam.
