A day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Sandeshkhali, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Subhendu Adhikari lashed out at her. At a rally organized in Sandeshkhali on Tuesday, Adhikari made serious allegations against Mamata Banerjee and her government. Accusing local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders of misconduct and harassment, he said the BJP will form a commission to investigate these atrocities if voted to power.

Conspiracy allegations against Mamata Banerjee

Shubhendu Adhikari said,
“Mamata Banerjee hatched a conspiracy to arrest the mothers and sisters in Sandeshkhali by making false allegations against them.”

He alleged that local strongman leaders of TMC, like Shahjahan Shaikh, committed atrocities against women and when women raised their voice against them, they were implicated in false cases.

The BJP leader warned that if the BJP comes to power in the 2026 assembly elections, a special commission will be formed to investigate the atrocities of Trinamool Congress leaders.

Reference to protests in Sandeshkhali

Sandeshkhali, an island region along the Sundarbans in North 24 Parganas district, witnessed large-scale protests in early 2024.

  • Reasons for protest: Accusations of land grabbing and sexual harassment of women against local TMC leaders.
  • CM Mamata Banerjee’s reaction: During her Sandeshkhali visit on Monday, Mamata Banerjee assured residents that there is no need to pay anyone money to avail the benefits of state government schemes.

BJP’s election strategy and allegations

Shubhendu Adhikari in his address said that BJP won from Nandigram in 2021 assembly elections and from Tamluk in 2024 Lok Sabha elections due to the support of Hindu votes.
He said,
“This momentum will continue till the 2026 assembly elections.”

Adhikari also accused the Trinamool Congress of resorting to unfair election methods. He claimed that there were flaws in the nomination papers of late TMC MP from Basirhat Haji SK Noorul Islam. BJP candidate Rekha Patra had filed a complaint with the Election Commission on this issue.

Attack on TMC and BJP’s plan

Shubhendu Adhikari launched a scathing attack on the TMC government and said that Mamata Banerjee’s government has completely deteriorated the law and order situation in the state. He told Mamata Banerjee “A person with mischievous intentions.” Asserting that his government is promoting atrocities against women and weaker sections.

The BJP leader appealed to his supporters to remain united to oust TMC from power in the 2026 assembly elections.

direction of future politics

The issue of Sandeshkhali has become another major front of political conflict between Trinamool and BJP.

  • BJP’s promise: Inquiry into atrocities committed against women and local residents if voted to power.
  • TMC’s side: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed to take the state government’s schemes to the public and end corruption.

This controversy is not limited to just Sandeshkhali; This can become a major issue in the politics of West Bengal till the next assembly elections.
