As the 24th year of the new millennium comes to a close, on December 31, Tuesday, indices opened on a negative note yet again.

The Indian markets opened flat on Tuesday, with Sensex at 77,863.83, down by 384.30 points or 0.49 per cent, and Nifty at 23,565.90, down by 79.00 points or 0.33 per cent.

Nifty Bank in the morning session was trading low at 50,790.65, also down by 162.10 points or 0.32 per cent.

From the Sensex pack, ITC, Nestle and SBI were among the major gainers in the morning session whereas yesterday’s gainers, Zomato, Tech Mahindra and HCL Tech were among the laggards.

From the Nifty tranche, BEL. ONGC and Coal India were amongst the gainers, while Tech Mahindra, Infosys and Adani Enterprises were among the losers.

The Indian rupee was trading at 85.58 against the dollar improving its standing compared to previous day’s closing of 85.78.

Markets on Monday

The stock markets ended the previous day of trade with palpable damages. Both the BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty are sinking further in red.

The 30-share BSE Sensex closed the day at 78,248.13. The index shed 0.57 per cent or 450.94 points of its value. Similarly, the NSE Nifty ended in red, declining by 168.50 points or 0.71 per cent, closing at 23,644.90.

Gainers and Losers

On Monday, Zomato, Tech Mahindra and HCL Tech closed the day with major gains.

Amongst laggards, Tata Motors, Titan, Mahindra & Mahindra, along with Tata Steel closed in red.

Energy and International Markets

When we look at the international crude oil market on the last day of 2024, the prices of benchmark avenue has seen an uptick.

The U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) increased to USD 71.23 compared to the previous closing of USD 70.99. Brent crude prices also increased to USD 74.13 a barrel, compared to its previous closing of USD 73.79.

On Monday, both S&P 500 and Nasdaq saw a collective drop in their numbers; meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average also saw a major drop in its overall value.

The S&P 500 closed at 5,906.94, losing 1.07 per cent or 63.90 points. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended at 42,573.73 with a loss of 0.97 per cent or 418.48 points.

Additionally, the Nasdaq Composite saw a big dip of 1.19 per cent or 235.25 points to reach 19,486.78.

The Asian indices are shut on account on new years. On December 30, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index lost 0.96 per cent to reach 39,894.54 at the time of closing. The TOPIX also lost, as it ended the last day of trade of 2024 in red a decline of 0.60 per cent to slump to 2,784.92.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng had a different story to tell, as the index surged by 0.61 per cent to jump to 20,164.34 points.

In mainland China, the SSE composite dropped in value by 0.17 per cent, to slump to 3,401.62

South Korea’s KOSPI also dropped in value. The index diminished by 0.22 per cent to crawl at 2,399.49.
