Manmohan Singh’s death is being remembered not only in India but all over the world. Former Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri recalled his relations with late Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. In an interview to PTI in Lahore on Friday, Kasuri said Dr Singh will be remembered in history as a person who dedicated himself to improving bilateral relations between the two countries.

Kasuri, 83, was the Foreign Minister of Pakistan from November 2002 to November 2007. He said that Manmohan Singh created a cordial atmosphere in the entire SAARC region. Meanwhile, he recalled a statement of Manmohan Singh in which he had said, ‘They are waiting for the day when it will be possible to have breakfast in Amritsar, lunch in Lahore and dinner in Kabul.’

Kasuri, in an interview to PTI, said he was fortunate to be part of the process that gave impetus to peace talks between the two countries. As a result, mutual trust between the two governments increased. Manmohan Singh’s peace efforts also helped him formulate a possible blueprint for the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. He clarified that this process started when the then President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf and India’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee were leading their respective governments, but there is no doubt that Dr. Manmohan Singh worked whole-heartedly in it. Manmohan Singh expressed his desire to visit his birthplace Gah, located in Chakwal district of Punjab province of Pakistan. Where he studied till fourth class. It is noteworthy that Manmohan Singh never visited his birthplace during his lifetime. Kasuri said that he had assured Manmohan Singh that he would be warmly welcomed in Pakistan. Kasuri expressed hope that one day it would be possible for the late Prime Minister’s wife Gursharan Kaur and other members of her family to visit Manmohan Singh’s birthplace. Apart from this, Kasuri expressed his heartfelt condolences to his wife and other family members as well as the people of India.
