Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. The central government is expected to announce a seven-day national mourning period, during which all government programs scheduled for Friday are likely to be canceled. The final decision on the mourning period will be made after a Cabinet meeting at 11 a.m. on Friday.
Karnataka Declares Public Holiday
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared a seven-day mourning period and announced December 27 as a public holiday. As a result, all schools, colleges, government offices, and banks in the state, including in Bangalore, will remain closed on Friday.
The Telangana government has also declared a public holiday on December 27 to mourn the loss of former PM.
Other States
So far, no other state has declared a holiday. Schools, colleges, government offices, and banks in major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad will operate as usual on Friday.
AIIMS Statement on Manmohan Singh’s Demise
Dr. Singh passed away at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The hospital reported that he had suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at home and was admitted around 8 p.m. on Thursday. Despite all efforts to revive him, he was declared dead at 9:51 p.m.
The hospital’s statement read,”With profound grief, we inform the demise of Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had a sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26th December 2024. Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.”
