With young Australian opener Sam Konstas using spectator’s phones to click selfies on day one of the Boxing Day Test against India, eyebrows have been raised over the usage of the same in the middle of the game. However, the ICC is yet to comment on the gesture as Konstas was seen taking selfies and signing autographs for fans.
In a video surfaced on social media, fans were seen competing for selfies and autographs as the 19-year-old had entertained a crowd of almost 90000 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with some audacious strokeplay, notably playing the reverse ramp off Jasprit Bumrah. The youngster reached his fifty off only 52 deliveries and was eventually dismissed for 60 off 65 balls.
As per the ICC rule, use of mobile phones or devices with internet connection by players is prohibited during live matches. Should Konstas be found guilty by the ICC, he could be fined. Here’s what the ICC rules say in this regard:
“Communication devices are prohibited within the PMOA, barring specific exceptions. Without exception, no player shall be in possession of, or use a communication device (such as a mobile phone or a device which is connected to the internet, while in the PMΟΑ). Failure to comply with PMOA regulations may result in financial penalties.”
“I was trying to put a bit of pressure on him” – Sam Konstas on Jasprit Bumrah
After the day’s play, Konstas suggested that it was quite exciting to face Bumrah, who tries to bring out the best in him. As quoted by ESPN Cricinfo, he stated in the presser:
“He’s a legend of the game, obviously, so I was trying to put a bit of pressure on him, and it paid off today. But obviously, he took three wickets and he changed the momentum. But I think I’m always challenging myself, trying to bring the best out of myself, so just getting that contest with him and trying to take his lines away.”
