Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A large number of challan receipts and seals of the RTO department have been recovered during the raids on the properties of a former RTO constable, said police here on Wednesday. The sleuths, however, suspect that the receipts and the seals are counterfeit.
The special police establishment (SPE) of Lokayukta Bhopal had conducted raids on the properties of ex-RTO constable Saurabh Sharma on December 19. Cash and valuables worth Rs 7.98 crore and many other important articles were found during the raid.
The constable had reportedly left the job in 2023, however, during the raids police found receipts of the RTO department from his house. The sleuths were surprised to see loads of receipts stored at the house. The said receipts are used for levying penalties on the vehicles flouting rules. The department issues these receipts to the particular office and also to a particular officer.
All records are kept in the office of the RTO department. Not only the receipts bundles, but department seals were also recovered from the Sharma’s properties. The recovery of bundles and seals from the house of a former staff member or at the private residential premises raises the questions.
The sleuths suspect that the receipts were printed at a private printing press and the seals were prepared by forging the documents and letters.
And after stamping the seal, the receipts must have been given to the RTO officials who used them in collecting the amount from the truckers.
Fair game, dirty tricks
Sleuths suspect that the accused and his aides were collecting the money through vehicle-challans and were keeping with them and also sharing it with their ‘masters’. Money collected from the truckers and receipt given to them seems legal, however, the amount collected never reached the state treasury but went into the pocket of the corrupts.
