Sunil Doshi, a renowned name in Hindi cricket commentary, has expressed deep concern over the declining standard of Hindi commentary these days. He said that at present Hindi commentary is not being taken seriously and it has become only a means of earning. He has appealed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take concrete steps to improve the standards of Hindi commentary.

Targeting former cricketers

Sunil Doshi said during an event in Indore:

“It is good that former cricketers are coming into Hindi commentary, but there are many people who have no attachment to Hindi. They are doing this work just to earn money. Justice should be done with Hindi commentary.”

effect of wrong hindi

  • Doshi said that wrong use of Hindi is giving wrong message to the new generation.
  • He gave the example:

“If a former cricketer says ‘Kirkit kheli rahi hai’ during the commentary, the young audience will also take it to heart as they consider these former players as their heroes.”

Funny incident:

Doshi narrated an anecdote amidst laughter:

  • “During a match, when a player got injured while fielding and started limping, a former cricketer said in the commentary that his gait had deteriorated.”
  • Calling it an insult to the Hindi language, he said that such commentary should be stopped immediately.

Request for improvement from BCCI

Sunil Doshi appealed to BCCI to take strict steps to improve the declining standard of Hindi commentary.

  • He said:

“You have sold the broadcasting rights, but have not given the rights to malign the Hindi language. Hindi is our identity, it is important to present it in the right way.”

Tips for Hindi Commentary:

  1. Training for former cricketers:
    • Special training program to learn correct pronunciation and usage of Hindi.
  2. Evaluation:
    • Monitoring to ensure language quality during commentary.
  3. Linguistic experts in the commentary panel:
    • The cricket commentary team should have experts who have proper knowledge of Hindi language.
