Mumbai: A 25-year-old technician died after getting trapped in an elevator shaft during maintenance work in a multi-storey building in Santacruz East on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the 13-storey Fortune Heights building at Shivaji Nagar in Santacruz East between 4.30 pm and 5.00 pm. The technician was attending to maintenance work when the accident happened. The deceased was identified as Ranjit Nirahu Gaud, who resided in Vasai.

A police officer stated, “He was inside the lift when he got trapped in the gap between the floor slab and the lift car on the first floor of the building.” The technician was rescued by the fire brigade and his colleague, who was outside the lift when the incident occurred. The technician was rushed to V.N. Desai Hospital in Vile Parle West, where doctors pronounced him dead. He was an employee of Sunray Elevator Company.

Statement Of Senior Police Inspector, Vakola Police Station

Prakash Khandekar, Senior Police Inspector, Vakola police station, stated, “We have filed an accidental death report. We will first seek the opinion of a technical expert and then determine exactly how the incident occurred. After that, we will take further action or file a case against the concerned individuals.”

Investigation officer Dole stated, “Gaud had been working with this company for the last one and a half a year. He and his colleague were on the building premises from 12 pm to 5 pm. The lift was not working, so Gaud told his colleague to check it out on the first floor; while he himself would the status on the ground floor. When his colleague went to the first floor, he heard a loud noise and immediately rushed down the stairs. The watchman told him that suddenly the lift went up, and Gaud got trapped in it.” When he could not be extricated, the police and the fire brigade were informed.
