Samajwadi Party MP from Kairana seat of Uttar Pradesh, Iqra Hasan has targeted the Modi government at the Center regarding the triple talaq law. He termed this law as a way to put Muslim men in jail and questioned the government’s intentions behind it.

‘Triple Talaq is a civil matter, making it a crime is wrong’

On a question asked on triple talaq in a podcast, Iqra Hasan said:

  • “Technically and logically, triple talaq is a civil matter and should be kept within the ambit of civil dispute only.”
  • He said, “It is not legally appropriate to make someone a criminal and send him to jail in civil cases. This does not happen in any other law.”
  • Iqra alleged that this law has been brought to target men of the Muslim community and put them in jail.

‘Muslim women are not benefiting from this, they are being harmed’

Iqra Hasan said that the government presents this law as a benefit for Muslim women, but the truth is the opposite.

  • He said, “After the enactment of Triple Talaq law, Muslim women have started leaving their husbands alone. This situation has become even more difficult for women.”
  • “Earlier Hindu women were left alone without divorce because the divorce process in the Hindu Marriage Act is complicated. Now the same situation is happening with Muslim women also.”

‘An attempt to punish men more than the welfare of women’

The SP MP stressed that this law is a new way of punishing Muslim men instead of protecting women’s rights.

  • “The BJP government claims that it was implemented to protect the rights of Muslim women, but I do not think so.”
  • He said, “Muslim women have not got any concrete benefit from this, rather this law has become a medium to put men of the community in jail.”

Political context of Iqra’s opinion on triple talaq

This statement of SP MP is going to further heat up the political debate.

  • This issue has long been a topic of heated discussion in Indian politics within the realms of religion, gender equality, and law.
  • Expressing her views, Iqra Hasan said that while implementing the law, its actual utility and social impact should have been considered.

Awaiting political reaction on Iqra’s statement
After this statement of Iqra Hasan, reaction is certain from BJP and other parties. This statement not only criticizes the triple talaq law, but also raises questions on the political intentions behind it.
