A positive news has come amid efforts to get international recognition for the Taliban government in Afghanistan. Saudi Arabia has announced the restoration of diplomatic relations with Kabul after a gap of three years. The Riyadh government shared the information about this decision on social media, which has given new hope to its relations with Afghanistan.

Afghan Foreign Ministry expressed happiness

This decision of Saudi Arabia was warmly welcomed by the Foreign Ministry of Afghanistan. Spokesperson Zia Ahmed said,

“This step will boost cooperation between the two countries and strengthen relations.”

He also said that this decision will help in solving the problems of Afghan citizens living in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia’s embassy will start from December 22

Announcing its decision, the Saudi government said that its embassy will resume work in Kabul from December 22. It was written in the social media post,

“We are committed to providing all essential services to the brotherly Afghan people.”

However, it was not made clear at what level the embassy would be represented.

Global doubt about Taliban government

After the Taliban took power in Afghanistan on August 15 in 2021, several countries, including Saudi Arabia, recalled their diplomats. The main reason behind this was the political instability of Afghanistan and lack of trust in Taliban rule.

The Taliban had claimed at that time that it was not the same as before and would now rule as a ‘new Taliban’. However, the international community did not take these claims seriously and many countries stopped diplomatic activities in Afghanistan.

Why is this step of Saudi important?

  1. First step towards getting legitimacy for Taliban government:
This decision of Saudi Arabia is an important achievement for the Taliban government. This may also inspire other countries to improve relations with Afghanistan.
  2. Relief for Afghan citizens:
A large number of Afghan citizens live in Saudi Arabia. With the opening of the embassy, it will be easier to solve their problems.
  3. Prospects for stability in Central Asia:
This move by Saudi Arabia can promote regional stability, especially if other Gulf countries also take steps in this direction.

future prospects

However, Saudi Arabia did not clarify whether the move was intended to recognize the Taliban government or merely to restore diplomatic ties. But it is certain that this initiative will increase the possibilities of cooperation between Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia in trade, development and other areas.
