Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A toy ward has been opened in the pediatric surgery ward of Hamidia Hospital. This special ward is adorned with toys and colourful paintings to ease the hospitalized children and relieve them from anxiety and negative emotions and help them cope with medical procedures.
Colourful decor and joyful surroundings will make the treatment experience enjoyable. This initiative is expected to improve both the quality and experience of treatment of the hospitalized children.
Gandhi Medical College (GMC) dean Dr Kavita N Singh inaugurated the ‘Toy Ward’ in the Pediatric Surgery Ward of the government-run facility. According to doctors, the process of hospitalization is a difficult confrontation for children and their families.
The child’s routine undergoes changes, and the stay in the hospital environment triggers stress, fear, anxiety, and often, emotional trauma. Such a situation may compromise their physical and psychological health besides hindering their ability to cope with procedures, causing changes in behavior and impairing recovery.
Department head Dr Dhirendra Srivastava said the ward has been specially designed for children who are admitted for operations. The ward will help in the quick recovery of children and improve their mental health, said the doctor, adding that the “children and their families will feel the hospital environment less stressful.”
GMC dean Dr Kavita N Singh said, “It is a positive initiative on part of the hospital administration and it is very important to take care of the happiness and comfort of children during their treatment. The toy ward will give new energy and confidence to the children and serve as an inspiration to other hospitals to take up similar initiatives, said the dean.
