The England men’s selection committee has announced the limited-overs squads for next month’s India tour and the Champions Trophy. Both squads have 15 players each as the men’s side will embark on their first assignment under new white-ball coach Brendon McCullum. Joe Root makes a return for the ODIs, while Ben Stokes will miss both the India tour and Champions Trophy.

Root, one of the consolidators in the England line-up, is in line to play his first ODI since the 2023 World Cup. The Yorkshire batter has good numbers in 50-over international cricket, scoring 6522 in 171 matches at 47.60 with 16 centuries. Stokes, meanwhile, was not considered for selection after sustaining a knee injury during the third and final Test against New Zealand in Hamilton.

Jonny Bairstow, who hasn’t donned the national colours since the T20 World Cup 2024, was overlooked by the selectors. The other notable inclusions are Sam Curran, Reece Topley, Matthew Potts and Will Jacks.

The schedule for the Champions Trophy 2025 is yet to be announced. England’s last tour to India was in 2021 and they lost in all three formats.
