The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated an investigation into the collapse of a stormwater drain chamber on JM Road, which caused a large pothole. The chamber, constructed just five years ago as part of upgrading the road’s drainage system, failed, raising questions about the quality of its construction.

PMC officials have confirmed that an investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the collapse. The issue came to light after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activist Prashant Kanojia filed a complaint. PMC officials inspected the site and discovered a large pothole forming around the chamber.

“The collapsed chamber and surrounding areas have been carefully examined to ensure the repair work is flawless. Iron barricades will remain for the next five to six days, after which traffic will resume,” said Road Department Head Aniruddha Pawaskar.

The chamber, reportedly built five years ago, has raised suspicions about construction practices. “An inquiry will be conducted to find out how this chamber deteriorated in such a short period. Accountability will be fixed on the engineers responsible,” Pawaskar assured.

JM Road has long been known for not having a single pothole for the past 30 years. However, the increasing waterlogging during monsoons in recent years prompted the PMC to enhance the road’s drainage capacity and construct new chambers.

This year, despite reduced waterlogging, the chamber opposite Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Udyan collapsed.

Citizens have cited that this incident has highlighted concerns about construction quality and accountability, especially in projects intended to address critical issues like waterlogging. The PMC has assured swift action to address the issue.
