Chandigarh: Panic gripped the Islamabad area of Punjab’s Amritsar city after a “blast’’ took place at the Islamabad police station in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The police, however, claimed that no blast had occurred at the said police station, and held that a heavy object had fallen on the temporary sentry post outside the police station, around 3 am, which damaged the iron sheet on the top of the police post. There was no damage to the police post or injury to anyone, the police added.

The residents living in the area, however, held that a blast-like loud sound was heard early Wednesday morning which created panic in the area making people come out of their homes to inquire what happened.

Senior police officers including Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar who visited the spot also denied the claims of blast. Bhullar told news persons that the police personnel on duty at the police station had rushed out after he heard the sound around 3.15 am but did not find anything.

Bhullar, however, admitted that some people had claimed on the social media that an “attack’’ had taken place at the police though it was baseless. The matter is being thoroughly investigated, he added.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav, who also visited Amritsar later in the day directed officers concerned to ensure professional policing and take strict action against the perpetrators in the said blast case.

He also reviewed the law and order situation of the border districts of the state and took stock of the progress achieved in previous attacks on police establishments. “All the previous cases of attacks on the police establishments including IED implant at Ajnala police station and hand grenade attack at police post Asron in Nawanshahr have been solved successfully and accused persons have been arrested,” he said.
