Kolkata: Amid violence in Bangladesh and attacks on minorities and verbal attacks on India, a nine-member delegation of ‘Mukti Joddhas’ (freedom fighters) on Monday visited Eastern Command headquarters at Fort William in Kolkata to celebrate Vijay Diwas.
Talking to the media, Brigadier General Mohammed Aminur Rahman, Bangladesh Military Leader said that the relationship of Bangladesh with India is ‘cordial’.
“We always appreciate the contribution of India during the Bangladesh Liberation war. The contribution of the Indian army has always been accepted. The relationship and bond between the two countries is cordial and will always remain so,” said Brigadier Aminur Rahman.
Asked about anti-India statements that are being made by a section of people in Bangladesh to which Brigadier Animur Rahman said, “There are people with vested interest. We receive lots of hospitality when we come here. This year too it was the same hospitality. The anti- India statements will not affect the relationship between the two countries. More than the statements, a good relationship is more important.”
Mohammed Nurul Alam, a Muktijoddha who was a member of the delegation mentioned that people of Bangladesh are ‘peace loving’ and only a handful are ‘hostile’.
Notably, apart from Brigadier Aminur Rahman, Group Captain Samrat Chaudhary, Station Commander, Advance Headquarters, Commodore Ajay Yadav, Naval Officer in-charge, West Bengal, Brigadier Ajay Kumar Das, Station Commander, Kolkata Military Station, Maj Gen Rajesh Arun Moghe, Vishisht Seva Medal, General Officer Commanding, Bengal Sub Area, Lt Gen RC Srikanth, Vishisht Seva Medal, Chief of Staff, eastern command, Indian Army, Maj Gen Abdus Salam Chaudhary (Retd), Bangladesh Army to name a few were also present in the programme.
Later, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who also attended the Vijay Diwas programme said that, “No one can forget the contribution of the Indian army and West Bengal army’s contribution for Bangladesh Liberation war. I will not comment on the present situation but will follow the instructions of the central government.”
