The passion for writing is deep inside many individuals, irrespective of their background. One such interesting author is Vijaya Sandireddy, a BMSCE Computer Science graduate. This technical team leader at Infosys, Bangalore, has come with her second novel When the Mountains Moved, an intense love triangle with the grand Himalayas in the backdrop. Her first romance bestselling book Bitten by Love charmed readers thanks to its relatable storyline.

The author speaks to The Free Press Journal regarding her latest book and journey into writing while being a techie.

What can you tell the readers about your latest book – When the Mountains Moved? What makes it a must-read?

When The Mountains Moved is a compelling story of a determined young woman who decides to trek in the Himalayas inspired by her grandfather’s tales about the majestic mountains. More than just a romance novel, it explores the profound bonds of friendship, the exhilarating trekking challenges, and the life-changing journey through the Himalayas. It delves into a tapestry of love, friendship, and self-discovery, aiming to captivate readers and keep them engrossed in the story.

It’s a must-read for anyone seeking an escape into a world of breathtaking scenery, adventure, and emotional awakening. It is a story that celebrates second chances, the transformative power of trekking and the magic of love.

How did the story for the book come up?

After my debut novel was released, I struggled with writer’s block while shaping my second novel. Then, fate intervened when I joined friends on a Himalayan trek. The journey was transformative. Reaching the peak after a challenging climb left me awestruck by the sheer emptiness around me. During the trek, I never expected it would profoundly influence my writing. The mountains demand your complete focus, leaving little room for anything else. When I returned, inspiration flowed effortlessly as if the mountains had woven themselves into my story. Looking back, I wonder: did the story lead me to the mountains, or did the mountains bring me back to the story?

Do introduce your first two books to those new to your books.

My first romance novel Bitten by Love is a heart-warming and sweet love story set in the backdrop of an IT company. It portrays the importance of friendships and family values in our system. Readers have connected deeply with the story and the response to the book has been incredible.

My latest novel When the Mountains Moved is an adventure-based romantic story filled with hope, love, friendships, and moments of introspection and self-discovery. I hope readers will connect with the emotional and challenging journeys of the characters, finding inspiration to embrace their own life’s path with courage and conviction.

You are big in the romance genre. What made you start writing books in this genre?

I am a romantic at heart and truly believe in the phrase – “Love conquers all!”. It was quite natural for me to choose romance as the genre for my first book. I am thoroughly enjoying the writing process, as being a romance writer is all about getting into the depths of this purest human emotion and building incredible characters who madly believe in love. Love stories have universal appeal and the response I got for my first romance novel has enticed me into writing another one.

What helps come up with a new story each in a genre? Is it tough?

I don’t think it’s very difficult to come up with stories. If you observe life closely, you see beautiful stories weaving all around you.  Everyone has a beautiful story that is waiting to be told. Having said that, it’s very important to take a break from the mundane, to connect with nature, to let go, and to be receptive to the inspiration that is all around you.

What kind of books do you personally read? More romances?

I read all kinds of books from romance, autobiographies, mythology, and poetry to self-help, spirituality and travel books. My all-time favourite now is the book A Man Called Ove.

You are from a very technical field. Is writing books different from your work an escape for you?

I work at Infosys. Infosys has been my first and only workplace since graduating, much like a first love. The beauty of the campus has profoundly inspired my writing. The people I’ve met at work, both colleagues and friends, have deeply influenced the characters in my novels. So, I can’t say that writing was an escape from my work. My work has fuelled my passion for writing.

Describe When the Mountains Moved in One Line.

If I had to describe When The Mountains Moved in one line, it would be “A heart-warming love story of a resilient woman and her transformational and inspiring trekking journey amidst the breath-taking Himalayas”.
