On Saturday, the civic team across all 24 administrative wards in Mumbai cleaned 2,603 barricades and cleared 427 tons of waste, including 363 tons of construction and demolition (C&D) debris from infrastructural sites. The two-day comprehensive cleanliness drive will continue until Sunday at 6 pm, followed by an inspection from senior civic officials on Monday.
The drive aimed to remove unclaimed debris, broken paver blocks, and damaged dividers commonly found at construction sites throughout Mumbai. Around 1,462 civic employees and 784 volunteers from non-governmental organisations participated, using 215 machines, including JCBs, dumpers, water tankers, mechanical sweepers, and Firex machines. The team cleared 363 tons of C&D waste, 49 tons of inert, silt, and solid waste, and 15 tons of garden and rank vegetation.
The assistant engineer (SWM) of each civic ward has identified roads with barricades and organised a cleanliness drive. Barricades were washed using pressure jets, while surrounding dust, filth, and debris were cleared with the help of necessary manpower and machinery. Separate dumpers were used to collect the debris, including paver blocks, broken dividers, and brick blocks, which will be sent to the C&D Waste Processing Plant for proper disposal.
