Mumbai: Train services on the Central Railway (CR) were severely disrupted on Saturday morning after a technical failure in the power supply from Tata Power affected operations on two major sections, Kalyan-Kasara-Igatpuri and Kalyan-Karjat-Lonavala. The disruption impacted train movements over a 150-kilometer stretch in morning around 45 minutes.
According to CR officials, the issue originated from a fault in the electric supply conductor near Thakurli, which tripped the system. “The electric supply conductor near Thakurli encountered a fault that tripped the system,” a senior railway official said. CR identified the fault as a “conductor parted” incident at Tata Power’s Netivali infrastructure.
However, Tata Power, in its statement, attributed the disruption to a lightning arrestor failure at Central Railway’s Chola substation. “The supply issues were due to a lightning arrestor failure at the Railway end,” the statement read.
According to TATA Power problem reported at 6:01 am when the supply on one of the lines from the Chola substation was interrupted due to the lightning arrestor failure. Central Railway’s attempts to restore power from another line without isolating the fault reportedly caused sparking on the secondary line, leading to a complete shutdown of the Chola substation, which supplies a load of approximately 30 MW.
Tata Power claimed it maintained supply availability to CR on one of the lines throughout the period, but the prevailing fault condition at the railway’s end hindered restoration efforts. Finally, at 6:50 am, CR resumed power supply after isolating the faulty equipment.
According to sources, this disruption led to significant inconvenience for passengers as train services between Kalyan and Lonavala, as well as Kalyan and Igatpuri, were severely affected during morning hours.
