‘Pakadwa Vivah’ or forced marriage, which involves the practice of abducting eligible bachelors and forcibly marrying them, usually by intimidating them with guns, is not uncommon in Bihar. In another such instance, a government BPSC teacher was abducted, assaulted, and forcibly married to a girl on Friday, December 13, in Katihar, Begusarai. A video of the incident is now going viral on social media.
Avnish Kumar was on his way to the school where he works in an e-rickshaw when two Scorpios blocked his path and twelve men abducted him on gunpoint, as per NDTV. As per the reports, he was married to a woman he was allegedly seeing for four years but was not marrying.
The woman, Gunjan who is from Lakhisarai district claimed that she and Kumar were in a serious relationship and frequently went to hotels together and also met Avnish’s home in Katihar.
Gunjan told NDTV that Avnish had promised to marry her and start a family, however, he turned down her proposal of marriage after she informed her family.
The couple were also allegedly caught by Gunjan’s family three days before the forced marriage.
Avnish declines being in a relationship
However, things took turn when Gunjan along with her family went to Avnish’s house in Rajaura after the forced ceremony. They went there only to discover that Avnish had ran away while his family refused to accept Gunjan.
On the other hand, Avnish declined all this and told NDTV that they were not in a romantic relationship. He further claimed that Gunjan was stalking him and was continuously trying to talk to him.
A complaint has been filed in the police station by both Gunjan and Avnish.
