Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh speaks in a discussion on the 75th anniversary of the adoption of India’s Constitution in the Lok Sabha during the Parliament’s Winter session, in New Delhi, on Friday, December 13, 2024.

On Thursday, Union Defence Minister and BJP figure Rajnath Singh initiated a conversation regarding the ‘Glorious Journey of 75 Years of The Constitution of India’ in the Lok Sabha.

In the context of the Indian Constitution, Rajnath Singh pointed out that women receive inadequate recognition. He mentioned that when discussing the creation of a nation, we tend to give more credit to the founding fathers than to the founding mothers.

He referred to a book titled ‘Founding Mothers of the Indian Republic: Gender Politics of the Framing of the Constitution’ by Achyut Chetan during the Parliament session. This book begins with the important task of deconstructing the prejudices linked to the phrase ‘founding fathers,’ which has heavily impacted constitutional interpretation.

In his address, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh noted the 15 female members of the Constituent Assembly and referred to them as the Constitution’s founding mothers. In the process, he also mentioned the names of these members.

Discussing the 15 female members of the Constituent Assembly, the list features Ammu Swaminathan, Vijay Lakshmi Pandit, Sucheta Kripalani, Sarojini Naidu, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, Leela Roy, Durgabai Deshmukh, Malti Choudhary, Renuka Ray, Annie Mascarenhas, Purnima Banerjee, Kamala Choudhary, Hansa Jivraj Mehta, Begum Ejaz Rasool, and Dakshini Velayuddha.
