For many, a hot cup of coffee is the perfect way to start the day or take a refreshing break. But beyond its energy-boosting properties, coffee might be the secret to living a longer life. Yes, you read that right! A recent study by researchers from the University of Coimbra in Portugal has revealed fascinating insights into how coffee consumption could potentially extend lifespan.
What did the study reveal?
The research team analysed data from 85 previous studies involving participants from Europe, the Americas, Australia, and Asia. Their findings showed that drinking at least three cups of coffee a day could add approximately 1.84 years to an individual’s lifespan.

Neuroscientist Rodrigo Cunha, part of the University of Coimbra team, explained, “Traditional clinical recommendations have at times overlooked coffee’s role in healthy ageing. Our review underlines the role regular, moderate coffee consumption can play in mediating against the biological mechanisms that naturally slow or fail as we get older—triggering a range of potential health issues and comorbidities.”
The study’s strength lies in its broad scope, analysing different types of coffee, demographics, and health indicators such as inflammation and metabolism. Additionally, factors like smoking and alcohol consumption were included to assess the effects of coffee consumption.
According to the research, regular coffee drinkers seem to benefit from preserved muscular, cardiovascular, mental, and immune system functions. Coffee consumption was also found to be inversely associated with the occurrence of common age-related diseases, including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, stroke, some cancers, diabetes, dementia, major depression and frailty.
Talking to FPJ, Zianab G., clinical dietician and sports nutritionist, suggested, “Drinking three cups of coffee daily may add 1.84 years to your life, according to a recent study but remember moderation is the key. It is important to have a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, which ensures you enjoy your cup of coffee without over-relying on caffeine. Excessive consumption may lead to insomnia, anxiety, rapid heart rate, or digestive discomfort.”
While coffee is not solely responsible for a healthier, longer life, the study highlights its role in promoting overall health and reducing the risk of severe illnesses. However, doctors suggest that moderation and mindful consumption are essential for a healthier and longer life.
