Mumbai: The city that never goes to sleep ushered in its second coldest morning in nine years, with the temperature dropping to as low as on Monday, a sudden drop of 3.5 °C in the minimum temperature in a single day.
In December 2015, temperatures had dropped to 11.4 °C. However, the all-time lowest minimum recorded in Mumbai is 10.6 °C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai. But this chilly weather will make way for warmer temperatures in the following week.
Mumbai Experiences One Of Its Hottest Days In December
Last week, Mumbai experienced one of its hottest days in December. On Sunday morning, the minimum temperature was 17.2 °C, a drop of eight degrees from the preceding three days.
“After the rise in temperatures last week, Mumbai will witness a dip in the mercury this week. The average day temperature is expected to be around 25 °C. The winter in Mumbai depends upon how strong the northerly winds are,” informed IMD Mumbai Director Sunil Kamble.
On Monday, the Santacruz observatory recorded maximum and minimum temperatures of 31.8 °C and 13.7 °C respectively. According to the IMD’s weekly report, until December 15, the maximum and minimum temperatures in the city will range from 30 to 34 °C and 12 to 22 °C respectively. The pleasant weather will continue with the bonus of clear skies and visibility. As the mercury dips in Mumbai, cases of cold, fever and viral infections are on the rise.
Statement Of Dr Padmaja Keskar
“During winter, health issues become more prevalent, particularly among vulnerable communities –respiratory diseases, allergies and viral infections being most common. As temperatures drop, people are more likely to stay indoors, creating an environment in which viral infections such as the flu, common cold, and pneumonia can spread rapidly,” said Dr Padmaja Keskar, Senior Consultant, Systems and Medical, Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action, said.
