Amid high-rise buildings that represent Mumbai’s modern and global outlook, lie century plus old schools, basking in the charm of their colonial architecture and glorious heritage.
Bombay Scottish School in Mahim, which entered its 177th year on 2024 this year is one of them. Established in the year 1847 (Victorian era) as an orphanage by Scottish Christian missionaries, Bombay Scottish is the second oldest school in the city, first being Christ Church School in Byculla, which was established in 1815.
The Cathedral & John Connon School located in Fort stands witness to 162 years of history, both within and outside the school walls. At present, the institute is busy reinventing routine school life for their students.
Kenia and Anchor School, situated in the by-lanes of Chinchpokli was established in 1917 that started off by offering education in Gujarati. Its has slowly moved towards English medium under the Maharashtra state board, and is affiliated with the Cambridge International Assessment and Education board.
The Campion school at Fort was once started on 20 January 1943 by members of Society of Jesuits. The School began its career in a rental ground floor at 45 New Marine Lines with just 23 children, but as the year advanced there were 70 boys on the rolls. The school now has over 830 students.
Cathedral School is one of Mumbai’s oldest and most prestigious schools. Founded in 1860 by Bishop Harding, it initially started as the Cathedral Grammar School. Over the years, it merged with other schools, including the Cathedral Choir School and John Connon School, and became co-educational. Notable alumni include Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Karishma Kapoor.
Queen Mary School, established in 1863, is a 158-year-old premier girls’ institution. Founded by Manockjee Cursetjee, it initially had 13 students. The school received funding from the Raja of Jamkhandi and the Sassoon Family. Notably, Madame Bhikaiji Cama, co-designer of the Indian flag, is an alumna.
