‘Chikungunya Triggers Lifelong Arthritis In 13 % Of Total Patients’
Indore (Madhya Pradesh): “Chikungunya is causing lifelong arthritis in genetically prone individuals, affecting 13 per cent of the total patients falling prey to the vector-borne disease,” experts said during the Clinical Rheumatology Workshop on Sunday.
Rheumatology Association national secretary Dr Bimalesh Dhar Pandey warned about the dual threat posed by the Aedes mosquito, which transmits both chikungunya and dengue.
Indore’s unseasonal warmth in December, despite being the cleanest city in the country, has aggravated mosquito breeding and increased cases of vector-borne diseases. The workshop brought together medical students, physicians, and specialists from orthopaedics, neurology, and other fields to discuss rheumatic diseases, including chikungunya-induced arthritis.
IMA Indore president Dr Narendra Patidar talked about the importance of such workshops in helping doctors identify arthritis early. Dr Soumya Jain from Saharanpur emphasised that creating awareness among patients and doctors can significantly reduce the disease’s severe consequences.
Meanwhile, Dr Neeraj Jain from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, shed light on advancements in treating ankylosing spondylitis, a spinal arthritis condition that affects men four times more often than women. He highlighted the shift from expensive injectable biologics to more affordable and safer oral biologics, improving patient outcomes.

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Acupuncture has shown promising results in treating neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and dementia, conditions for which modern science has no specific cure. Dr Bhaskar Jyoti Bhattacharya, Acupuncture Association of India, addressed the national conference AAICON on Sunday and explained that acupuncture therapy improves blood circulation to brain cells, enhancing their function and delivering positive outcomes.
The therapy also benefits patients with Parkinson’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis, significantly improving their quality of life. Experts explained acupuncture’s effectiveness in treating spinal problems, increasingly common due to prolonged sitting jobs.
They said that the therapy, combined with lifestyle changes, provides 80–90 per cent relief in such cases. They also described acupuncture as a painless, economical, and natural treatment method that uses needles without external medications, thus avoiding side effects. By targeting specific acupuncture points in the body, the therapy promotes healing in a holistic manner.
