Several incidents of theft marred the grand oath-taking ceremony of the new government at Azad Maidan, an event graced by prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Bollywood celebrities.

As the event concluded and attendees exited through Gate No 2, thieves took advantage of the crowded situation, snatching gold chains and pickpocketing purses.

According to sources, a police constable’s bag, containing his ATM card, cash, clothes and other items, was reportedly stolen during the ceremony. The theft, captured on CCTV at the municipal gate, has raised concerns about security lapses. It is alleged that the constable initially reported his bag as ‘missing’ rather than stolen and faced difficulties at the police station while attempting to file a formal theft complaint. Displeased with the lack of cooperation, the issue was reportedly discussed in a police WhatsApp group.

In addition to the constable’s loss, 13 others reported thefts of their belongings, including 11 gold chains and two purses. Police sources revealed that among the victims three were women. The stolen items are estimated to be worth Rs 12.04 lakh. Several complainants also reported missing mobile phones, but instead of registering theft cases, the police reportedly instructed them to submit ‘missing’ reports for their devices.

Despite the extensive security measures in place for the high-profile event, the thieves managed to operate undetected amidst the crowd. The Azad Maidan Police Station has registered cases against unknown individuals and launched an investigation.
