In the name to maintain the purity, new rules regarding clothes and use of mobile phones have been enforced in the ancient Ekling Ji temple of Udaipur.

Under the new rules, devotees coming here for darshan will not be allowed with short clothes (mini skirt, Bermuda) and night suits. The use of mobile phone has also been prohibited in the temple premises. A banner urging the visitors to maintain the sanctity of the temple and follow the new rules has been put up in the premises by the temple management on Friday.The 1700 year old Ekling Ji Temple is in Kailashpuri village, about 22 kilometers from Udaipur and known as the deity of Mewar.

The temple management said that many devotees coming to the temple had complained about ‘indecent’ clothing.  Udaipur is a well known tourist destination of Rajasthan where hundreds of foreign and domestic tourist arrives every year and visits this temple. Under the new rules, carrying mobile phones in the temple has been prohibited as well. Earlier, devotees and tourists coming to Ekling Ji temple were allowed to carry mobile phones inside but use of this for taking photographs in the temple was not allowed. Apart from this, carrying pets and any kind of weapons in the temple is also prohibited.

Notably, A year ago, a similar dress code was enforced in the historical Jagdish temple of Udaipur city.  However, as the controversy escalated, the Devasthan Department of the government removed the posters regarding this.
