Mumbai: A woman residing in the Gorai area of Mumbai lost Rs 6.37 lakh to cyber fraudsters who lured her with the promise of earning money by completing online tasks. Following her complaint, Borivali Police have registered a case against six unidentified individuals and are investigating the matter.
On November 30, at around 11 AM, the victim came across an advertisement for a part-time job while scrolling through social media reels. The ad claimed she could earn money by liking videos online. Upon clicking the link, she was directed to a Telegram group where the cyber fraudsters explained the process.
Initially, the woman received small payments for liking videos, which convinced her to trust the scheme. The fraudsters then persuaded her to invest money in tasks, promising higher returns. The woman fell for the trap and transferred Rs 6.37 lakh in three transactions.
When she did not receive the promised profit, she contacted the fraudsters, who demanded additional money as “tax” to release her earnings. Realizing she had been scammed, the woman approached Borivali Police and lodged a complaint against six unidentified individuals.
The Borivali Police have registered a case and are currently investigating the cybercrime. A senior police officer stated, “We are tracing the money trail and the identities of the individuals involved in the fraud. Citizens are advised to avoid clicking on suspicious links and verify the legitimacy of online job offers.” This case serves as a cautionary tale for people to remain vigilant against such online scams.
