Lucknow, 3 December (Hindustan Reporter). In-door cancer rehabilitation facility will soon start in Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow. Apart from this, the National Medical Sciences Examination Board is planning to start Neuro Rehabilitation Fellowship, MD course in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. This information was given by Professor V.S. Gogia, Head of PMR Department of Lohia Institute.
An awareness program about disabilities and their rehabilitation was organized on World Disability Day by the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation (PMR) of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences.
Professor VS Gogia informed that the PMR department of Lohia Institute is the only PMR department in Uttar Pradesh which has the facility of robotic rehabilitation for neurological patients (stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, Parkinsonism, etc.). The PMR department runs specialized rehabilitation clinics covering pain management, pediatric disability, sports injuries, cardio-pulmonary diseases, cancer, neuro-musculo-skeletal Specialized rehabilitation care covering a range of conditions is available.
Professor Dinkar Kul Shrestha of Neurology Department also addressed on this occasion. He emphasized on the leadership roles that persons with disabilities can achieve with timely PMR treatment. He also briefed about the working of the PMR team and its lead, PMR specialist doctors.
Dr. Yashveer Singh, Associate Professor of PMR Department, said that about one thousand PMR experts are working in India and about 20 PMR experts are working in Uttar Pradesh. At present only one institute is offering MD in PMR course and five medical colleges under the Government of Uttar Pradesh have PMR departments.
Dr. Singh said that NMC and Government of India should take initiative to increase the PMR department and PMR specialists, so that we can provide rehabilitation management to this large group of population of our society.
On this occasion, people with disabilities were also made aware of the benefits and facilities available to them through the Government of India and State Governments as well as NGOs.
