2000 rupee notes: MP Dinesh Chandra Yadav has clarified that Rs 2000 notes are still valid and can be exchanged. This information was given by Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in response to a question in the Lok Sabha on 25 November 2024. The question was whether Rs 2000 notes could still be exchanged and whether the RBI was still hoarding them or not. It was also asked how many Rs 2000 notes were collected by RBI after the announcement of demonetization on 19 May 2023 and the deadline of 30 September/1 October 2023.

Notes can be changed here and there

Pankaj Chaudhary said that till October 7, 2023, the facility to exchange and deposit Rs 2000 notes was available in all bank branches. Note exchange facility is available in 19 issue offices of RBI from 19 May 2023. From October 9, 2023, RBI issue offices are accepting Rs 2000 notes from individuals and institutions for deposit in their bank accounts.

Post offices are also involved in this process. You can deposit your Rs 2000 note into your bank account by sending it to any of the 19 issue offices of RBI through any post office. The minister clarified that Rs 2000 notes will remain legal tender.

In a reply sent to MP Dinesh Chandra Yadav, Pankaj Choudhary said that RBI has received Rs 2000 notes from all sources, bank branches, issue offices and post offices. The MP has also shared a copy of the minister’s reply. This has made it clear to the people that Rs 2000 notes are still in circulation and the facility to exchange them continues.

You can still change Rs 2000

The government has repeatedly clarified that Rs 2000 notes are legal tender. People can exchange these at banks and RBI offices without any hassle. The facility of depositing notes through post office is also a great relief to the common people, especially those who cannot easily reach a bank or RBI office.
