National football league (NFL) team Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarter-back Trevor Lawrence received a pounding late in the game on Sunday against Houston Texans as a brawl broke out at the Everbank Stadium in Florida. In a video surfaced on social media, Lawrence’s teammates jumped to his defence as the opposition players were furious.
With only four minutes left in the fixture between the Jaguars and Texans, Lawrence ran in hard to make it towards the first down marker. While approaching the line to gain, Lawrence went for the slide; however, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair’s momentum meant that he could not slow down either, colliding with the opposition player.
A brawl broke out immediately after that and below is the video of the same.
Lawrence was fortunately cleared of concussion as he took to X and issued an update saying, “Thank you to everyone who has reached out / been praying for me. I’m home and feeling better. Means a lot, thank you all.”
“That was a dumb hit on his part” – Josh Hines-Allen
Defensive-end Josh Hines-Allen criticised Azeez Al-Shaair, claiming that it was a ‘dumb hit’ on his part and said, as quoted by NewsWeek:
“That was a dumb hit on his part … At the end of the day he’s just playing football, but again, the way we’ve changed the rules of how we play, we go over these things. We talk about these things. We know how to play football. A couple of years ago, that would’ve been a great hit, but now that wasn’t a good play on him.”
Tight end Evan Engram opened up on his observations, remarking:
“Obviously those hits are always in question. Trevor was going down and I saw it out of my peripheral [vision]. I got a pretty clear view of it, and in that moment, just [reacted on] instincts. It just didn’t feel like a clean hit, so just go stick up for my quarterback.”
