Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Religious themes and retro looks are trending this wedding season in the city. Mandaps themed on Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir are in great demand. The bride and groom enter the stage to the sounds of dhol-tasha and blowing of conch shells, with aartis playing in the background.
Pichwai – an art form of large, intricate paintings depicting scenes from the life of Lord Krishna – is being used to decorate the venues of Haldi and Mehndi ceremonies.
At the same time, modern technology like drone light shows, Baarat on Wheels, ATVs and SFX are being used to make weddings memorable both for the guests as well those tying the knot.

“A section of his clients are demanding weddings based on religious themes and retro looks. Mandaps looking like Ram Mandir and bhajans and aartis for music are a new trend,” says a wedding planner Anmol Budhiraja.
Baarats are now accompanied by ‘DJ on wheels’ with an anchor giving a running commentary. Artists from Mumbai and other places are invited to perform in Haldi, Mehndi and other related ceremonies.
Another wedding planner, Deva Jain who is associated with the profession for around 10 years, says that plain or flower backdrop have replaced LED screens in Sangeet ceremonies for the convenience of photographers. In another new trend ‘Saat Vachan’, the groom and the bride stand at the two ends of the dais and take steps towards each other as the seven wedding vows are read out, followed by Varmala.

Jain says that care is taken to ensure that the dress and the jewellery of the couple match the decoration. According to him, many foreigners are also tying the knot in Bhopal. “I am planning the wedding of a Thai man and Belgian woman,” he says.
According to Lucky Panchal, who has been planning and organising weddings for the past 12 years, the dulha-dulhan arriving among the guests riding an ATV (All-terrain vehicle) is also among the new trends. Drone light shows have also become part of weddings. In these shows, multiple drones, equipped with lights, are used to create visuals in the sky during reception. These may include sentences like ‘Forever begins now’ or heart-shaped or other designs.
