A man has been arrested for driving a car in a heavily inebriated state, trying to run over a cop and later smashing into police barricades and private vehicles when the cops asked him to stop in Andheri East. The accused, Sabyasachi Devpriya Nishank from Worli, was finally caught following a hot chase by other commuters in the wee hours of Thursday.
According to the police, the incident occurred between 1am and 3am during a routine drunk driving check near the Gokhale bridge. At around 1.05am, the cops signalled a white Honda car to stop, however, the driver tried to run over an on-duty officer and sped away. The police managed to stop the car momentarily, but when they asked Nishank to roll down the window, he refused and fled again, breaking through the barricades.
The police pursued the car, which went on to smash through more barricades on Mahakali Road and hit two-three vehicles, including bikes and cars, along the way. Some of the commuters joined the chase and eventually intercepted the car near the JVLR. Still adamant, the accused refused to open the door, prompting one of the pursuers to break the car’s window. A scuffle ensued before the police arrived on the scene and detained Nishank, who was accompanied by a woman passenger.
A breathalyser test revealed that he was heavily intoxicated. A case has been filed against him under section 185 (drunk driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and provisions 281 (rash driving or riding) and 324(4) (causes loss or damage) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
