Mumbai: The Central government has blocked nearly 6.7 lakh SIM cards and 1.32 lakh IMEIs (International Mobile Equipment Identities) used by cyber-criminals, officials said on Wednesday. The officials said that so far, more than Rs 3,431 crore has been saved in 9.94 lakh cybercrime complaints across the country.
The government and telecom service providers (TSPs) recently devised a system to identify and block international calls displaying Indian numbers that appear to be originating within India. Such calls have been made by cyber-criminals in recent cases of fake digital arrests, courier scams, impersonation as government and police officials, etc.
According to the officials, a Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC) was recently established at the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) where representatives of major banks, financial intermediaries, payment aggregators, telecom service providers, IT intermediaries, and representatives of law enforcement agency are working together to tackle cybercrime.
I4C proactively identifies and blocks fake IDs used for digital arrest. Seven Joint Cyber Coordination Teams have been constituted for Mewat, Jamtara, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Visakhapatnam, and Guwahati under I4C covering the whole country based on cyber crime hotspots/areas having multijurisdictional issues. Seven workshops were org.sed for JCCTs at Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Lucknow, Ranchi, and Chandigarh, officials said.
Cybercrime Reporting Portal Launched
A cybercrime reporting portal’ (cybercrime.gov.in) has been launched to enable the public to report incidents pertaining to all types of cyber crimes, with a special focus on cyber crimes against women and children.
Cybercrime incidents reported on this portal, their conversion into FIRs, and subsequent action thereon are handled by law enforcement agencies as per the provisions of the law. I4C has imparted cyber hygiene training to 7,330 officials of various ministries/departments of the Government of India and has imparted cyber hygiene training to more than 40,151 NCC cadets.
