Harini Amarasuriya has assumed office as the 16th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. She became the third woman in the history of Sri Lanka to hold the office of Prime Minister. The new PM of Sri Lanka is highly educated and has a special connection with India.

Harini Amarasuriya’s educational journey began in India. Due to the closure of schools and colleges in Sri Lanka during the Tamil movement, he joined the Hindu College of Delhi University in 1990. Here he completed his graduation in sociology. During her days at Hindu College, Harini not only excelled in studies but also actively participated in college festivals and debates. Interestingly, famous film director Imtiaz Ali was his batchmate. After graduation, he completed his PhD in Social Hum.ties from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Return and social work in Sri Lanka

After education, Harini Amarasuriya worked in an NGO related to health and education in Sri Lanka. His efforts to help children affected by the tsunami brought him widespread recognition. He then worked as a college professor and taught in the fields of sociology and hum.ties.

Harini’s political career

In 2019, Harini entered politics through the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party. Due to his social commitment and leadership abilities, he was elected MP in 2020. In September 2024, he was appointed as the interim Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, a testament to his leadership abilities.

Hindu College’s pride and connection with India

Hindu College Principal Anju Srivastava expressed pride in Harini’s achievement and said it was an honor for the college. He said the Hindu College education would help Harini improve her leadership skills. Harini’s new role could prove important in strengthening relations between India and Sri Lanka. His former batchmates have also expressed happiness over this achievement.
