Prayagraj, 18 November (HS). The Allahabad High Court has banned the recovery of money from Head Jail Warder Kailash Meena in the suicide case of a prisoner in Muzaffarnagar District Jail and has ordered the state government to file its reply within six weeks.

Ankur, son of Virendra, a prisoner in barrack number 9-10 of Muzaffarnagar District Jail, had committed suicide in 2019. Taking cognizance of this, the National Human Rights Commission had recommended a compensation of Rs 4 lakh. After investigation, Additional Civil Judge (Junior Division) found Kailash Meena not guilty of any negligence. Despite this, the Superintendent of Meerut District Jail issued an order to recover compensation from Kailash Meena on 24 October 2024. Head jail warder Kailash Meena challenged this order in the High Court.

Justice Vikas Budhwar has stayed the order of the Jail Superintendent after hearing the arguments of the petitioner’s lawyer. The court said that it would not be appropriate to take any decision without listening to all the parties in the case. The next hearing will be on January 20.
