8th Pay Commission: The central government employees and pensioners were expecting an increase in salary and pension from January 2026 under the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission. But now it seems that this wait can be a bit longer. According to a report by the Financial Express, the scheme can be postponed by 2027 instead of January 2026, as the implementation of the commission’s recommendations may take longer.

When will the new pay scale apply?

The 8th Pay Commission will start officially from January 2026, but the revised salary and pension changes cannot be implemented before the start of 2027. However, whenever the new pay scale is applicable, employees and pensioners will get 12 months arrears. According to government sources, it may take 15 to 18 months to finalize its recommendations for the Commission. In addition, the Commission may also submit an interim report before submitting the final report, but the entire report is likely to come only by the end of 2026.

When will the 8th Pay Commission be set up?

According to reports, the Union Cabinet may approve the conditions (TOR) of the 8th Pay Commission next month. The government is in the final stages of the process of formation of the Commission and official notification will be issued as soon as the cabinet approval is received. The commission will start its work from April 2025.

What has happened so far and what will happen next?

The government has announced the formation of the 8th Pay Commission on 16 January 2025. Subsequently, many important decisions have been taken regarding Tor and process. Recently, the government was questioned in the Parliament regarding the appointment of the commission’s work-by-work and panel members. In response, the government said that the decision on the instructions, chairman, members and time limit of the Commission will be taken ‘at the right time’.

What will be the changes in the 8th Pay Commission?

So far, the employee side of the National Joint Consultative Machinery Council (JCM) has sent its recommendations for Tor. It has demanded major changes in the salary structures, allowances and facilities of government employees and pensioners. An important recommendation is related to the merger of some pay scales, so that the salary system becomes simple and problems related to career development can be eliminated. The government has also sought suggestions on this subject from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Home Affairs and Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT).

What will be the next plan of the government?

The Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT) had sought suggestions from the employee side of the National Council (JCM) to finalize the subjects for the 8th Pay Commission. It remains to be seen how much the government implements these recommendations and how much attention it pays to the demands of the employees.
