Vile Parle Tragedy: Crane Mows Down 80-Year-Old Woman, Driver Arrested | Representational Image
Mumbai: An 80-year-old woman was mowed down by a crane, while she was crossing the road in Vile Parle West on Thursday. The accused driver, Arvind Yadav, 20, allegedly fled without providing medical assistance. He was arrested later with the help of his vehicle’s registration number.
According to the FIR filed by the Juhu police, the fatal mishap took place around 2.10pm near Prime Mall. Due to Yadav’s reckless driving, the victim, Bina Mathure, came under its right rear wheel, said the FIR. After getting an alert, the police arrived at the scene and found Mathure lying unconscious under the crane’s right rear wheel.
Her left hand had been severed, while she was bleeding profusely, said the police, adding that she had also sustained head injuries. The senior citizen was taken to Cooper Hospital where she was declared dead. Documents found on the woman’s body helped the police ascertain her identity. She was a homemaker and lived near the post office in Vile Parle West.
According to the eyewitnesses, Yadav, a Goregaon resident, fled after the incident. A police officer said, “The crane driver fled out of fear that people might beat him.” He has been booked for causing death by negligence, act endangering life or personal safety of others and rash driving.
