A 76-year-old woman was found dead with severe burn injuries in her rented apartment in Pune’s Kothrud area on Monday morning, officials said.
According to the police, the woman was identified as Kamal Sampatrao Ghuge. She lived alone in a one-room-kitchen apartment in the Guru Ganesh Nagar locality of Kothrud, they added.
Fire officer Prakash Ghuge said, “We received information about the woman around 8.30am. A police team and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot. When we reached the spot, we found a woman lying in a badly burnt condition on the first floor of the building. The woman was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.”
Police suspect that the death was accidental, and the woman may have come in contact with fire while lighting a lamp. However, they are probing various angles.
A team from Kothrud Police Station also visited the spot. Sambhaji Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Pune, said, “A probe is on to ascertain the cause behind her death.” “The body has been sent for autopsy, and further details are awaited,” he added.
