Navi Mumbai: A 72-year-old retired professor of the Mumbai varsity lost Rs1.88 crore after falling prey to the digital arrest scam. Posing as the Supreme Court judges and the officials of central law agencies, the scammers kept him under ‘arrest’ on video calls for a long time.

On November 15, a woman contacted the senior citizen from Vashi, pretending to be an official from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. She claimed that his Aadhaar card was linked to a SIM used to send obscene messages. The gang even sent fake arrest warrants and held dubious court hearings.
