Mumbai: A 70-year-old woman lost her life in an accident in Dahisar West on December 29. The deceased was identified as Lila Fernandes. She was crossing a road in Kandarpada when a motorcyclist struck her, causing her death.
The 27-year-old accused, Ratan Kumar Soni, was admitted to the hospital along with her family. Meanwhile, Lila’s son alleges that the accused, Ratan Kumar Soni, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
However, the police have denied this claim, stating that they collected his blood sample and will confirm the results once the report is received.
The MHB police have issued a notice to Soni. According to the FIR, Lila Fernandes resided in Kandarpada, Dahisar West. She would regularly go out to purchase essential items.
On Sunday, around 9.15 a.m., she left home to buy bread from a bakery near her house. As she was crossing the Kandarpada road in front of the bakery, a motorcyclist hit her from her left side, causing serious injuries and bleeding from her right ear to her head. The motorcyclist took her in an autorickshaw.
Lila’s maid informed her son, Godwin Fernandes, who arrived at the scene and the accused and her son both took her to MM Hospital in IC Colony.
The doctor advised them to shift her to Karuna Hospital. During the treatment, the doctor pronounced her dead around 1 p.m. By then, the police had arrived at the hospital, conducted a panchnama, and handed over her body to the family.
The motorcyclist, Ratan Kumar Soni, resides in the same area and works as a patient caretaker in a private hospital. Lila’s son, Godwin Fernandes, filed a case against Soni, alleging that Soni was under the influence of alcohol.
However, the police have dismissed the allegation. A police officer stated, “The motorcyclist did not flee, he was present when she was admitted. We issued a notice to him and collected his blood sample, which will be sent to the Kalina laboratory. Preliminary investigations have not found evidence that he was drunk when the accident occurred.”
The police registered the case under sections 106(1) (Causing death by negligence), 125, 125(a), 125(b) (Acts endangering life or personal safety of others), and 281 (rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act, on December 30.
