Pune is currently grappling with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder linked to contaminated food and water. Here are symptoms to watch out for:
Muscle weakness and tingling: The initial symptoms of GBS often include muscle weakness and tingling sensations (paresthesia), typically starting in the feet and legs and progressing to the arms and face
Difficulty walking or climbing stairs: Muscle weakness in the legs can make basic movements like walking or climbing stairs challenging
Deep Muscular Pain: Many individuals experience deep muscular pain, particularly in the back and legs
Paralysis: In severe cases, paralysis can occur in the legs, arms, or facial muscles, and in extreme situations, near-total paralysis may develop
Chest Muscle Weakness: Around one-third of people with GBS may experience chest muscle weakness, leading to difficulty breathing
Speech, Swallowing & Vision Issues: Difficulty speaking, swallowing (dysphagia), moving the eyes, or other vision problems are also common symptoms
Bilateral Impact: The symptoms usually affect both sides of the body and often come on suddenly
